More About the owners
Trained as a professional engineer, Johan has an active interest in a wide range of topics and issues. Guests enjoy long conversations (in Afrikaans, English or German) with him on subjects such as genealogy and heraldry, sport and politics, rare plants and animals, science and technology, music and architecture. His career included a stint as Design Engineer in Cologne, Germany before joining a civil engineering firm in Pretoria, and later in Stellenbosch.
Johan’s passion for indigenous succulent plants is visible in the rooftop feature garden of the apartment behind Caledon Villa manor house.
Ode is a multi-faceted artist: a violinist, painter, poet and author. She is also an avid collector of porcelain dolls, anthropological artefacts and oil paintings. Ode studied at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cologne, Germany. Her Master’s thesis was based on the artwork of the Ndzunza tribe in South Africa. Her artistic contribution to the guest house includes examples of well-known South African artists.
